Jet ski horror
A perfect day at the beach ended in horror yesterday, after a runaway jet ski ploughed into a vacationing Barrackpore family and killed seven-year-old Angelica Jogie at Pigeon Point, Tobago. Scores of visitors, both local and foreign, were at the popular beach relaxing after the Easter weekend when tragedy struck. According to reports, around 4.30 pm, Jogie was playing in the water with a large group of relatives, within the area designated for bathing only, when the jet ski suddenly motored past the barrier and slammed into Angelica, her parents and her uncle. The jet ski operator never stopped and remained on the run from the police last night. Read more here
Businessman killed in home shootout
A businessman was shot dead yesterday morning at his home in Vistabella, San Fernando, in what police say was a fatal confrontation involving a woman. Steve Ghany was involved in his family’s business in multiple construction projects. Ghany, 37, who was married for 11 years and a father of two, was also well-known in the jet-ski fraternity. Police said an argument broke out between Ghany and the woman around 8.30 a.m., which escalated into a physical fight. Read more here

PM announces energy mission to Venezuela
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar says a diplomatic delegation will soon travel to Venezuela to ensure Trinidad and Tobago secures its “just share” of cross-border oil and gas resources, signalling a renewed push to advance long-stalled energy projects. Speaking at a $69 million fire tender handover ceremony in Penal yesterday, Persad-Bissessar said the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen the country’s economic security alongside improvements in national safety infrastructure. “Shortly, a diplomatic delegation will depart Trinidad and Tobago to go to Venezuela to ensure we get our just share of the oil and gas, which we partly own through the NGC,” she said. Ameen: $1b debt at corporations
Minister of Rural Development and Local Government Khadijah Ameen has estimated debts at regional corporations to be over a billion dollars. After a meeting with mayors and other regional corporation officials yesterday, Ameen said that although money was allocated in the past, it was not being released by the previous government. Speaking outside the San Fernando City Corporation’s Auditorium, she said that yesterday’s meeting was a normal administrative exercise she started having before the mid-year review and budget. Tunapuna businesses urged to innovate
Despite a challenging economic climate, entrepreneurs in Tunapuna and the surrounding areas are being encouraged to prioritise innovation and expansion to remain competitive. Speaking at the opening of Pat & Max Ltd’s new facility at the Trincity Industrial Estate on Tuesday, managing director Melissa Senhouse underscored the importance of continuous growth in a volatile business environment. “If you’re not expanding and growing, then you’re dying,” Senhouse said. “There’s nothing called standing still. If you’re standing still, you’re dying. So you have to continuously grow and evolve for you to be able to move forward and to survive.” Senhouse, a former president of the Greater Tunapuna Chamber of Industry and Commerce (GTCIC) for the 2020–2022 term, said her company’s relocation reflects a deliberate strategy to scale operations and adapt to changing market demands. New Fair Trading and RIC boards appointed
Board members have finally been appointed to the Trinidad and Tobago Fair Trading Commission (FTC) and the Regulated Industries Commission (RIC). They will be chaired by senior attorney-at-law Nisha Persad. In an interview with the media after a swearing-in ceremony yesterday at President’s House, St Ann’s, Persad said her appointment as chairperson of both regulatory bodies was “not irregular”. “I believe prior to (former FTC chairman Ronald Ramkissoon), there was an RIC chairman who was also the FTC chairman. So, it is not irregular because a member of the RIC must be on the FTC,” she explained. Read more here

Guyana, St. Kitts and Nevis formalise bilaterial framework
Guyana and St. Kitts and Nevis have deepened their bilateral ties with the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) on Wednesday, aimed at boosting security cooperation, strengthening agriculture and food security, and modernising systems of governance. The agreements inked between President Dr. Irfaan Ali and Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew at the Office of the President here in Georgetown establish a formal framework for collaboration across key strategic sectors, with benefits expected to extend beyond the two States to the wider Caribbean Community (CARICOM). Trump criticises Nato as alliance chief describes meeting as 'very frank'
Donald Trump has again attacked Nato for not supporting the US in the Iran war, following a private meeting with its Secretary General Mark Rutte at the White House. In a post shared to Truth Social after the meeting, the US President said: "NATO WASN'T THERE WHEN WE NEEDED THEM, AND THEY WON'T BE THERE IF WE NEED THEM AGAIN." Meanwhile, Rutte has described his meeting to CNN with Trump as "very frank" and "very open", despite clear disagreements. Ahead of the talks on Wednesday, Trump had toyed with the idea of quitting the trans-Atlantic military alliance after several Nato countries resisted his calls to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz to ease rising global oil prices.
