Bandits cover Laventille granny's face before taking $300

Police are searching for two bandits who invaded an 81-year-old Laventille woman’s home, covered her face with a pillow, and then robbed her of $300. The victim was asleep at her home on Pashley Street around 1.15 am on November 2, when she heard a noise in the living room. She went to check and was confronted by two men, one of whom had a gun and who pointed it at her. The men demanded, "just hand over the money and doh make any noise eh!” They took her back to her bedroom, forced her lie on the bed and then covered her face with a pillow. The bandits stole her handbag with $300 in it. The men then walked out of the house and escaped. Read more here

Emotions run high in SYG senate debate

Emotions ran high in the Senate on December 2, during debate on the Home Invasion (Self-Defence and Defence of Property) Bill, 2025. His voice filled with emotion and his legs shaking, government senator Brian Baig recounted his experience as a victim of a home invasion, before calling on the Senate to pass the bill in the name of a murdered relative who also died during a home invasion. Speaking about his experience, Baig said it robbed him and his family of not only valuables, but also of their peace of mind. He said it has had a permanent effect on his psyche. “To this day I wake every day at 3 am, the hour before the incident took place, because I think that man in still in my house.” Read more here

Sumner said that, similar to Methanex’s assets in New Zealand, the offshore gas fields in T&T are “all mature and at end of life.” Read more here

Crisis looms in Israel over ultra-Orthodox conscription bill

An impending crisis over conscripting ultra-Orthodox Jews into the Israeli army is threatening to undermine Israel's government and split the country. Public opinion on the issue has shifted dramatically in Israel after two years of war, and this is now perhaps the most explosive political risk facing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Lawmakers are currently considering a draft bill to end the exemption granted to ultra-Orthodox men enrolled in full-time religious study, established when the State of Israel was declared in 1948. That exemption was ruled illegal by Israel's High Court of Justice almost 20 years ago. Temporary arrangements to continue it were formally ended by the court last year, forcing the government to begin drafting the community. Read more here
