Shot dead at home: Family alleges “execution” by police

Relatives of a man fatally shot by police in his home are raising serious concerns about the circumstances surrounding the confrontation, questioning the police officers use of deadly force. Shivnath Jogie, 45, a labourer, was pronounced dead at the hospital after he was shot in a confrontation with police at his home on Old Train Line in Corinth in the early hours of Sunday. Initial police reports indicate that officers went to investigate a physical altercation between Jogie and a neighbour, who was chopped in Jogie's yard with a cutlass. The police team went to Jogie's home around 1.30 a.m. and during an alleged confrontation with the officers, Jogie was shot...read more

From hardship to High Court victory: student awarded $500K

A HIGH Court judge has ordered the State to compensate a Carapichaima man after finding that the Ministry of Education had denied him access to a tertiary bursary. In an oral ruling delivered on Friday, Justice Joan Charles upheld a constitutional claim brought by Ajay Bachan and awarded him a total of $500,000 in damages. Bachan's lawsuit stemmed from events in 2021, when he altered both his programme of study and institution after being informed he had secured a government bursary. He had initially enrolled in a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme at The University of the West Indies (UWI), St Augustine, funded through the Government Assistance for Tuition Expenses (GATE) scheme, despite having ambitions of becoming an accountant...read more

PNM: We only knew Young would be overseas

People’s National Movement (PNM) chairman Marvin Gonzales says the party was only informed by former prime minister Stuart Young that he would be out of the country, as questions continue over Young’s meet-up with Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodríguez last week. However, Gonzales, who is also Opposition Chief Whip, yesterday declined to comment on the details of Young’s trip. “I don’t want to comment on that further,” Gonzales told Guardian Media. He added, “As Chief Whip, he (Young) informed me that he was going to be out of the country. Minister of Energy and Energy Industries Dr Roodal Moonilal says a significant boost in natural gas production is on the horizon following the arrival of heavy equipment at the Point Lisas port on Friday.  During a visit to the facility, Moonilal viewed oversized components shipped overnight from Houston by Touchstone Exploration. Acting Venezuelan President arrives in Barbados
