Embassy condemns murder of Chinese businessman

The Chinese Embassy on Tuesday condemned what it called an “atrocity targeting Chinese nationals” after the murder of San Juan businessman Bingzhang Zhu. Zhu, the owner of Golden City Supermarket, was attacked just after closing hours on Good Friday. A one-minute CCTV video, which was shared on social media Saturday, showed Zhu walking from his van after retrieving an envelope. Police responded to the shooting and killed one of the three suspects responsible for Zhu’s death. The man was later identified as Kishonte Reid of Pembroke, Tobago. Read more here

Crime overbearing, say relatives, as 2 men gunned down on highway

Shaken after hearing gunshots ringing out as she drove along the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway (CRH) in Piarco on Monday, Carlsbury Lewis’ niece passed the crime scene, unaware that it was her uncle being gunned down. On her way home, she heard the radio reports about the incident but it was when she got home and received the call that Lewis had been one of the victims that it registered with her that their family had lost a loved one to gang warfare. Lewis, 51, of Mohammed Street, St Augustine, died around 8.15 pm on Monday, after gunmen opened fire on his car as he was driving along the westbound lane of the CRH in the vicinity of Piarco Plaza. UTC celebrates BreakthrU graduates

Four people have become the latest graduands of the Trinidad and Tobago Unit Trust Corporation’s Career BreakthrU programme. Kai Emmanuel, Keisha Alexander, Nicole Lewis and Syndii Maxime were the successful participants in the fifth cohort of the programme, which is designed to provide team members with an opportunity to explore different career aspirations, as well as hone new skills that can increase their potential for career mobility. Participants spent one year in different departments of interest while operating at a higher level of responsibility on projects and assignments. Read more here

Caribbean Airlines moves to expand fleet

Caribbean Airlines (CAL) is expected to present a strategic plan to the Cabinet before the end of this month in which the company will tell government about its plans to expand its operations, to increase connectivity to Trinidad and Tobago and throughout the region. Read more here

Approximately US$7.5B needed to achieve ‘25 by 2025’ target

The lack of access to nutritious foods has been a persistent problem not only in the Caribbean but around the world. At a discussion for Caribbean leaders on Tuesday, President, Dr. Irfaan Ali and several other officials discussed their views and insights on food insecurity in the Caribbean. Approaching the issue head-on, the President, who has been championing efforts to improve regional food security, said that at least US$7.5 billion in investments would be required for the region to achieve its ‘25 by 2025’ target in a very conservative manner. The initiative entails lowering the region’s larger food-import bill by 25 per cent by 2025. Read more here

Kentucky bank shooting: Bodycam video shows police under fire

Police in Louisville, Kentucky, have released bodycam footage of the fatal shootout between police and a banker who gunned down five colleagues. The video shows two officers getting shot as they advanced towards the lurking gunman during Monday's attack. One officer was hit in the head, while the other suffered a graze wound before killing the suspect. Deputy Police Chief Paul Humphrey said the videos show the officers heroically intervening to save lives. Four people - including the police officer who was shot in the head - remain in hospital. Police say the 25-year-old suspect used a legally purchased AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle during the attack, which he was live-streaming. Read more here
